PADI Freediver event in Costa Rica

Freediving is about inward power, discipline and control. If you want to enter the underwater world peacefully, staying as long as your breath allows, then freediving is for you.

Here at Oceans Unlimited  we are hosting our first PADI Freediver event with instructor Gauthier Ghilain. He is a renowned freediving instructor and is involved in International Competitive Freediving. He’s now a 80+ meters (260+ ft) Freediver and is the current Belgian National Record holder in Constant Weight no Fins (54m/177ft)

Here at Oceans Unlimited in Quepos, we will be running two programs over  a period of 5 days. The first program is the PADI freediver course where you will be learning the ins and outs of freediving. The second course is the Advanced freediver where you will then take your skills to the next level. Check out the details below and come join us to explore more!

PADI Freediver Course

This is your first step into the world of freediving and will teach you the basics and beyond of freediving techniques.

To enroll in this PADI Freediver course you must be at least 15 years old. You need adequate swimming skills and need to be in good physical health. No prior experience with snorkeling, skin diving or freediving is required.

There are three main sections to the PADI Freediver course.

  • Knowledge development about freediving principles through a mixture of independent study with the PADI Freediver Touch and instructor led sessions.
  • Confined water session to learn breathhold techniques as well as static and dynamic apnea. Goal – static apnea of 90 seconds and dynamic apnea of 25 metres/80 feet.
  • Open water sessions to practice free immersion and constant weight freedives, plus proper buddy procedures. Goal – constant weight freedive of 10 metres/30 feet.

What is included?

Your materials, certification and equipment rental are included however it is recommended that you have your own mask, fins and snorkel.

Cost of course is $275 per person including manual and certification. Equipment rental is included but it is recommended that you have your own mask and snorkel

PADI Advanced Freediver course

The PADI Advanced Freediver course is designed to fulfill that personal need to refine and improve your freediving skills. It allows you to progress slowly while learning how your body performs during apnea.

To enroll in this program you must have a PADI Freediver certification (or a qualifying certification from another freediver organization).

There are three main sections to the PADI Advanced Freediver course.

  • Knowledge development about advanced freediving techniques and equipment. There will be a mixture of independent study and instructor led sessions..
  • Confined water session to learn stretching and relaxation techniques as well as refine static and dynamic apnea. Goal – static apnea of 2 minutes, 30 seconds (2 minutes for freedivers younger than 18) and dynamic apnea of 50 metres/165 feet (40 metres/130 feet for freedivers younger than 18)
  • Open water sessions to practice deeper free immersion and constant weight freedives, along with additional buddy procedures and rescue techniques. Goal – constant weight freedive of 20 meters/65 feet (15 metres/50 feet for freedivers younger than 18)
